Having seen Mick demo a number of times we were expecting a good show and we were not disappointed in any way! The demo was at Border Woodturners in Brampton as part of their calendar of events.
The day started off with Mick turning and then "spoiling" (his words not mine!) a perfectly good piece of wood to make it into a wide rimmed bowl - the "spoiling" was done with a mini arbortech and the colouring was done with the Jo Sonja range of iridescent and metallic paints, available online from Mick himself.
Following on from this Mick demonstrated goblet turning with a view to texturing/carving the outside surface, the need for an ample volume in a wine goblet was also stressed. Mick also demonstrated the Martell hook tools he uses, these are not well known in the UK other than for pole lathe work when making bowls. Mick made the tool look deceptively easy to use however I suspect that would be anything but the case in practice for us mere mortals.
The day was rounded off with a bowl with external colouring and a very clear demonstration of texturing using the Sorby spiralling and texturing system both on the rim and on the inside of the bowl to create a central boss.
All in all a really good demonstration, if you get the chance to go and see then do so!
