I was scratching around for an idea for an upcoming exhibition and saw the post lying on its side and most likely destined for someones stove or fireplace and I thought lighthouse...of course, as you would.

So this the first part of the conversion of the gatepost into a lighthouse, first of all a lighthouse needs to have....a light!

I dont have the ability to drill a hole long enough so it had to be cut into sections which I could drill through, this also meant I could remove some the more damaged areas. I have opted for a hole large enough to fit a steel tube through which should help strengthen the thing and give me a really strong spigot to attach it to its base.

The base is going to be a lump of very weathered and gnarled Elm which has been sitting in my woodpile for a little while just waiting for a purpose, well I think its time is now!

All told the thing should stand about 2.5-2.7 metres tall when its finished and I think we may well need a crane to move it.....not entirely sure how I am going to get it into the gallery for the exhibition but we will cross that bridge when we get to it.
